Introducing the fullstack developer meetup group

Nov 16, 2019

The past few months I've begun organizing the fullstack developer meetup in downtown Oakland, CA to grow the community and learn from other developers in the East Bay.

Over the past four or five years I’ve attended hundreds of meetups in the Bay Area, Africa and other parts of the United States (namely Chicago for Laracon 2018). Meetups are an important part of growing as a developer. They’re not critical for every developer, but for me it shows strong signal about the health of the technology and companies hiring in the tech space. I remember meeting Quincy Larson, Founder of FreeCodeCamp.org at a meetup at PubNub with him showing off FreeCodeCamp as what I thought of then as a shitty Node.js app. Now it’s a global force Quincy’s own Indiehackers interview showcases how they’ve taught millions to code while remaining not for profit. Inspiring stuff!

Recently I’ve started a meetup called the Full Stack Developer Meetup Group on eventbrite and meetup dot com. We’ve had three events so far. One at Ask Media Group, another at Kickstart Coding and the most recent one (I think our biggest success yet) at Fivetran. Coming up, there will be an open coding session at Kickstart Coding in downtown Oakland on November 20th. I’ve reached out and been speaking to people at Marqeta, Launch Darkly and Mailchimp about hosting future events (most likely in 2019). There’s also potential for a webinar with the team at npm Inc.

My goal with the meetup is to keep a broad and inclusive group open to developers of different backgrounds that use different programming languages and technologies. I’ve found that most meetups are centered in SF and focus on specific technologies. I’d like to grow the developer community in Oakland and bring open dialogue to the problems developers encounter and how they’ve solved them. Shout out to Phone2Action for supporting me in this endeavor and providing a best in class advocacy software to companies, non-profits and trade associations. Below are some images from past meetups and shots I’ve taken around downtown Oakland before joining the group. Enjoy and hope to see you at a future event!
