Associate Director, Data Science - Maze Therapeutics

The Position: 

We are looking for an experienced data scientist working in the life sciences industry to join the infrastructure and operations team at Maze Therapeutics. As an Associate Director you will be working with scientists across the organization to identify and drive data science initiatives towards accelerating drug discovery. At Maze, we are impact obsessed in every initiative and as part of your role, you will be responsible for evaluating beyond the hype of the latest technologies and identifying tools that could productively augment our tool chest that we draw from, to support various steps of the target and drug discovery life cycle and help push the needle forward.  

This role reports to the Vice President of R&D Infrastructure and Operations where you will be joining a small team of highly motivated individuals with diverse skills from chemistry, cell biology, bioengineering, and software engineering who work together to support our scientists in achieving our goal to transform the lives of patients. 

Your Impact: 

• Drive the overall strategy for application of data sciences across the organization, ensuring alignment with our mission and vision.
• Process, stage, and manage large volume genomic datasets to support analysis workstreams.
• Incorporate protein language models and other large language models (LLMs) to predict variant effects, protein structures, and their interactions towards accelerating drug discovery. 
• ⁠Evaluate and implement new data sciences capabilities to support target identification, validation, drug discovery, and patient stratification.
• Work closely with computational chemistry/biology, structural biology, and other quantitative biology groups to evaluate and apply appropriate machine learning models to augment the Maze Compass Platform™ and accelerate drug discovery.
• Collaborate with computational biology to build and maintain bioinformatics pipelines and work with Informatics to build and maintain the scientific computing infrastructure.
• Manage the data science team, guiding scientific computing efforts, and driving FAIR data principle education and evangelization of data sciences.

Skills and Qualifications: 

• Advanced degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, bioengineering, or other relevant quantitative discipline (statistics, mathematics, engineering, etc.)
• 10+ years of work experience in data science roles within drug discovery organizations
• A deep understanding of statistical analysis methods, data engineering, and genomic pipeline development
• Proficiency in scientific or quantitative computing platforms (Python or R)
• Experience handling large volume omics/genetics datasets, high-performance clusters, and cloud computing (AWS, GCP, spark)
• Familiarity with small molecule drug discovery tools and workstreams.
• Knowledge of best practices in reproducible scientific computing (git, documentation, FAIR principles, etc.) and with common bioinformatics software and toolkits
• Proven track record of working with multidisciplinary teams and leveraging large public datasets to facilitate novel target discovery and refine patient selection.

The expected annual salary range for employees located in the San Francisco Bay Area is $202,000 - $245,000. Additionally, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus. Maze performs position-based compensation benchmarking to industry market data to ensure we pay competitive wages. Determination of starting salary will depend upon a variety of job-related factors, which may include professional experience, skills, and job location. The expected salary range for this role may be modified in the future.
