Tech Companies in the United States
What is a tech company?
For the past decade or so “tech company” has meant “software company” or if you’re even more hardcore tech companies would only comprise of “software as a service” companies. At Employbl we love software but view the mantle of “tech company” as more broad. Life sciences and biotech companies are developing technologies to cure diseases and make us live longer. Defense companies are building technologies to wage war and protect their populations. Some tech healthcare companies are building tools to make work more efficient or make patient’s lives better and longer. Our definition of a tech company at Employbl is kind of like the U.S. Supreme Court’s definition of what is pornography – we know it when we see it. For your purposes know we’re tracking over 16,000 (and counting) companies we believe to be “tech companies” and building you tools so you can explore features and trends within the vast American technology company landscape.
How many tech companies are in the United States?
This is hard to answer because it depends on how you define a tech company and harvesting all of this data on the millions of companies incorporated in the United States is pretty tough. Zippia estimates that there are over 500,000 tech companies in the United States but I’m calling bullshit on that. At Employbl we’re tracking about 15,000 companies that are based in the United States and work primarily in technology. I’m sure there are thousands of early stage startups and even established companies we’ve missed but half a million seems to be juicing the numbers. Only a small percentage of all tech companies are backed by venture capital firms, though the ones with VC dollars do tend to get most of the press.
Looking at Software Companies based in the United States we’re tracking over 9,000 active companies currently.
