Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Staff Materials Engineer to join our world-class Cathode Engineering team. Our Cathode Engineering Team brings together experts in Materials, Battery, Test, and Process engineering to understand, design, and validate Form Energy’s iron positive electrodes.

This role reports into our Manager of Cathode Engineering. As part of our Cathode Engineering team, you will characterize, test, and create specifications for gas diffusion electrode (GDE) materials and mixing processes in collaboration with our Supply Chain, Research & Development, GDE Manufacturing, and Cell Engineering teams. Your experience with scaling materials for product readiness will allow you to contribute mixing and other process expertise to our cathode product.This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!

What you'll do:

  • Lead project teams to develop improved Cathode mixing processes, in collaboration with  process and manufacturing teams at Form Factory 1

  • Prioritize safety as you create materials specifications for components of Form Energy’s electrodes backed by property <> product performance linkages and understanding of electrochemical mechanisms

  • Develop characterization methods for specifications that can be transferred into quality control metrics in manufacturing.

  • Characterize electrode materials pre and post-test in collaboration with our internal material experts and external vendors. Develop characterization techniques where needed.

  • Design, execute, and interpret cathode electrochemical tests in large- and lab-scale test vehicles and Form Energy field-deployed batteries

  • Mentor, guide, and support team members with your expertise and practical experience with the potential to formally manage as an individual contributor

What you'll bring:

  • 7+ years of experience in electrochemically-focused materials engineering

  • Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field

  • Demonstrated experience in building property <> performance relationships for batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers, or other electrochemical material systems, particularly in deployed and/or market-ready products

  • Proven ability to use the property <> performance relationship to define product specifications for large scale processing

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills: ability to communicate at all levels of the organization from executive-level to working teams

  • Demonstrated skills in supplier operational and relationship management

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approx. 20% of the time
